Admission Policies
The Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School experience is defined by respect for the individual, excellence in academics and extra-curriculars, service to the community, and a faith that does justice.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin seeks to enroll students who are prepared to be successful academically and contribute positively to the NDCL community as a whole. We value diversity and admit qualified candidates without regard to race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin evaluates each applicant on elementary school record, standardized tests scores, effort and conduct marks, and performance on the NDCL placement test. At times, it is impossible to accept every student who meets the admissions criteria because of space limitations. We may consider factors subsequent to academic qualification when making an enrollment decision, including: family members who attend(ed) NDCL, NDA or CL, attendance at a Catholic elementary school, active membership in a Catholic parish, and contribution to school community. An all-inclusive approach to student selection is standard policy and all guidelines will be consistent with the mission of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.

Admission Procedure for Eighth Grade Applicants

A. Application

  1. Any eighth grader from a Catholic elementary school in the Cleveland diocese follows the procedure given by the Office of Catholic Education. Students obtain the application from their elementary schools according to the diocese time line for admissions.

  2. Students from other schools follow the same time line but request the application form from NDCL. A complete transcript of grades and standardized test scores must be submitted with the applications.

  3. There is no entrance test; however, interested eighth graders are required to take a placement test. These results are used after acceptance to help place students in ninth grade classes.

B. Late Application

Eighth grade students applying after the February 14, 2008 deadline could be placed on a waiting list, provided all criteria are met. Students will be accepted from the waiting list according to the priorities for admissions.

C. Criteria for Acceptance

  1. Students must be of at least average academic ability according to national norms on standardized tests taken in the seventh and eighth grades: minimum requirement of 40%-ile or stanine of 4 on standardized tests.

  2. A correlation between standardized test scores and actual achievement should be evident. Students at average ability should achieve at least C's.

  3. Conduct, effort and attendance records from the elementary school must be satisfactory, particularly in the seventh and eighth grades.

  4. Students of all faiths are required to participate in daily religion classes and all religious services held during the school day. Participation is also required in NDCL's retreat and service program.

  5. Students and parents must accept and support the philosophy of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.

D. Conditional Acceptance

Students accepted conditionally may be asked to withdraw if conditions of their acceptance are not met. Such conditions may include improvement in grades, conduct, effort and attendance.

Procedure for Students Seeking Admission to Grades 10, 11, 12

  1. Tenth-grade applications will be considered if there is room in the class. Students applying for tenth grade should contact NDCL to obtain an admissions application.

  2. Applications for eleventh and twelfth grades are generally not accepted, unless there are extenuating circumstances such as relocation. Please contact the admissions office if you have any questions.

  3. The criteria and priorities for acceptance apply to all applicants for grades 10, 11, and 12.
