SERVICE

Service to our community is central to understanding our role as parts of the Body of Christ. NDCL students are required to complete ten hours of service each semester. Students are strongly encouraged (and required their Junior Year) to spend their hours in social justice oriented organizations in order to better understand the complexities of systemic needs in our community.

At Christmas time we have a giving tree which gives families an opportunity to buy a gift for a needy child. In addition, we take a large representative of students to two inner city schools at Christmas time to share Christmas joy with Santa, elves and gifts. Once a month throughout the year students work together after school to prepare bag lunches for a local homeless shelter. In addition to the two food drives during the year, various other collections such as blankets, diapers and coats are held when needed.

Student Service - Requirements

Requirements: Each grade level is required to perform a specific amount of hours as listed below. Students may not count service hours given to a relative, a business that is for profit, an animal shelter, or any hours that are monetarily compensated. Helping friends with yard work, babysitting or moving are also excluded. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in projects sponsored by churches, schools, communities and social service agencies. NDCL promotes many of these opportunities through school announcements, the REC and in the religion classes.

Freshmen: The class of 2011 must perform 20 hours of community service (10 hours each semester.) Students may perform up to 10 hours for the school and 5 hours for a sick or elderly

neighbor in need. Students must successfully complete their service requirements by May 20th. Students failing to achieve this responsibility will not be allowed to return for their sophomore year.

Sophomores: The class of 2010 must perform 20 hours of community service (10 hours each semester.) Sophomores may perform up to 10 hours for the school and 5 hours for a sick or elderly neighbor in need. Students must successfully complete their service requirements by May 20th. Students failing to achieve this responsibility will not be allowed to return for their junior year.

Juniors: The class of 2009 must perform 20 hours of community service (10 hours each semester.) Juniors are required to complete service opportunities listed on the JUNIOR APPROVED LIST or obtain permission from the Service Coordinator for an alternate project. Approved lists have been given to the students in school and additional copies can be picked up in the Campus Ministry Office. Students must successfully complete their service requirements by May 20th. Students failing to achieve this responsibility will not be allowed to return for their senior year.

Seniors: The class of 2008 must perform 20 hours of community service (10 hours each semester.) All of their service hours must be for the Church or the community-at-large. Seniors are required to complete their service requirements by May 1st. Students failing to achieve this responsibility will not be allowed to participate in end of the year activities, including graduation.
