“On behalf of the Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin community, I am very
pleased to announce that the new gymnasium currently being built on NDCL’s
campus will be named the Eugene T. Baker Gymnasium. This is an enduring tribute to Mr.
Baker for his gifts and commitment to Catholic education at NDCL," said
Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane, SND, President of NDCL.
Between 2002 and 2006, Mr. Baker established three endowed
scholarships, The Joanne T. and Eugene T. Baker Endowed Scholarship, The Mr. and Mrs.
T. A. Baker Memorial Scholarship, The Victoria Foley Baker and Eugene T. Baker
Scholarship. These scholarships
provide tuition assistance at NDCL in perpetuity.
This recent gift from the Baker estate will provide an additional
$2 million to be split between two of the scholarships and give more students
with need the opportunity to attend Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.
While not a man of many words, Mr. Baker was exceedingly responsive
to the importance of helping others to be educated, “Mr. Baker was a self-made
man with quick-wit and a generous heart. He was keenly aware,” commented Sister
Jacquelyn, “that a person accomplishes nothing in life alone. He considered himself lucky because had a
loving wife, Victoria, and many wonderful friends who helped him and as he
said, ‘You need to return the favor.’”
