Senior Hailey Oppenlander makes the most of summer
Hailey Oppenlander `18 had a busy summer - to say the least. Desiring to help others and hone her writing skills, she actively pursued volunteer and career opportunities that would give her real-world work experience and position her as a standout senior.

Hailey's junior retreat experience at the Cleveland Catholic Charities inspired her to pursue a volunteer position with the organization. The rising senior taught a Self-Sufficiency Class to refugees from central Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Hailey was responsible for arming her mostly middle-aged students with practical knowledge for living in the U.S. She planned and taught two weekly classes that included lessons on American culture, money, and practical language and vocabulary.

“I really came to appreciate humanity and diversity. These people have overcome so much, and faced so much adversity; it made me realize how really blessed we are,” Hailey shared.

In addition to her work with Cleveland Catholic Charities, Hailey explored a career opportunity in a field she is passionate about - writing.

“It made sense for me to contact the Geauga County Public Library in Chardon, since I spend so much time there anyway,” she stated. Assigned to the Marketing Department at the GCPL Administration Center, Hailey contributed by writing press releases and blog articles. “I learned about disseminating information as well as writing and editing for print and online submissions.”

“I really liked my experiences this summer. It would be great if I could find a way to carve a career that included both working with people who need my help and writing.” Hailey holds NDCL’s mission close to her heart and is already transforming the world!
