Students, Teachers clean up Mentor Headlands Beach

About 50 of our students and teachers took Pope Francis' call to care for creation to heart by cleaning up the beach at Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor on Tuesday.

In two and a half hours scouring the beach, the group collected 290 pounds of garbage, including 22 lighters, 2813 pieces of plastic, 465 cigar tips, 774 cigarette butts, and 403 miscellaneous pieces of garbage.

The clean-up included a prayer experience that focused participants on the beauty of creation and our Christian responsibility to cherish and protect it so that we can pass it on to future generations.

Science teacher Mrs. Adrienne Fox coordinated the project as part of the International Coastal Cleanup and Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach programs.
