5 NDCL artists earn ribbons in Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions contest

Five NDCL student artists—more than any other Catholic school in northeastern Ohio—earned awards in the eXpressions art competition sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic, continuing a winning streak that began when NDCL first entered the prestigious competition three years ago.

Out of hundreds of entries from schools throughout the Clinic's market area, this year only 61 works earned the judges' nod.

Juniors Nina Berschig and Amanda Spangler earned blue (first-place) ribbons, freshman Olivia Farone won a white (third-place) ribbon, and seniors Rebecca Mancini and Chris Evans earned an honorable mention for their shared entry.

eXpressions is an interdisciplinary program that utilizes art to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning, students produce artistic interpretations of research conducted by Cleveland Clinic summer interns. Last year two NDCL students won spots in the Clinic's prestigious internship program.

In addition to being exhibited in the eXpressions Art, Language, and Math eXhibition at the Global Center for Health Innovation, the award-winning artworks will be featured in the program's print and online art catalogs. The exhibition at the Global Center will open on January 29 with a formal dedication and reception. The artists will receive gift cards and their teachers—Mrs. Mary Ann Sedivy and Miss Susan Ancheta—will be awarded educational grants from the Clinic.
