NDCL Students Respond to Advent Service Opportunities

Campus Ministry is central to the mission of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School. Through the devotion and thoughtful care or our campus ministers, Ms. Christie Fleming and Mrs. Beth Davis, and our faculty, we affirm NDCL’s commitment to our core values – justice, respect, integrity, community and excellence – while ensuring our mission to transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.

During this Advent season, we are particularly aware of the needs of the people of our city and surrounding areas, and reach out in ways to assist in making life better for them. Students are giving their time and loving service and, in small ways, making a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters. NDCL's Campus Ministry welcomes students willing to expand their hearts and vision to embrace those for whom God has a special love. Our students are presently engaged in the following service opportunities during this Advent.

ST. JOSEPH OF ARAMITHEA SOCIETY: Our juniors and seniors provide a bereavement ministry on an as-needed basis by serving as pall bearers, prayer leaders at the graveside, or responders to those who are elderly or indigent. NDCL partners with All Souls Cemetery and local funeral homes as recommended by the Catholic Cemeteries Association.

KARPOS MINISTRY: This new ministry provides an evening hot meal to the homeless in Lake County. It is served at St. Mary Church in Painesville on the second Thursday of every month. Students prepare, serve and clean up, offering a warm meal and a welcome to those in need. Any student may become a part of Karpos ministry.

JULIE BILLIART SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP: NDCL girls involved in this ministry interact with 7th and 8th grade girls after school at Julie BIlliart in Lyndhurst. Its intent is to serve as mentors and friends in preparing the children for the adjustment to high school.

THE REFUGEE RESPONSE: This weekly visit with the children whose families are from Burma takes place in homes on the near west side of Cleveland. At the invitation of the non-profit organization, The Refugee Response (TRR), NDCL began this service over five years ago. Our students come to know the beauty of a new culture while assisting the children in subject areas that present a challenge for them, especially math and reading. Volunteer students from NDCL are transported to and from the tutoring site by a school van.

In all of the above opportunities, NDCL provides the transportation. One or more faculty members accompany the groups. These service opportunities are available all year, not just in Advent. Students, who would like to join one of the groups, should contact Mrs. Beth Davis or Ms. Christie Fleming in the Campus Ministry Office at NDCL.
