NDCL Scores 1st Place in Financial Literacy

NDCL students, Ben Wozniak, Colin O’Neil, Brian Nelson, Ben Pinzone, Amanda O’Reilly, and Nora Nelson participated in the Mad City Money Financial Literacy scholarship competition at Lakeland Community College. The event, hosted by several local credit unions, included Cardinal Community Credit Union with whom NDCL has active partnership.

Eighteen teams from the area schools competed. Among them were: Madison, Mentor, Lake Catholic, St. Ignatius, Chardon, and Mentor. All were given profiles for a fake life including income and debts. The challenge was to budget for monthly expenses so that at the end of the month checking account was as near as possible to $100. “We all had to make smart financial choices, and work as a team to make sure that if one person spent a little bit too much a different team member spent a little less than budgeted” said O’Reilly.

NDCL’s team, Scowgers, achieved the best final balance $99.90. Their first place prize was a $3000 scholarship. Additionally, every participant received a ticket to Cedar Point.
