After a series of five high-intensity trials in Columbus last weekend, NDCL's mock trial team emerged as the state runner-up in the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education's Annual Mock Trial Competition.

The Lions defeated teams from Sylvania Southview High School, Bishop Watterson High School, Westerville High School, and Saint Vincent-Saint Mary High School before falling in the final round to Indian Hill High School, a multi-year state champion.

More than 3,000 students from 27 different Ohio counties participated in this year's competition. In the end, it came down to just two top teams: NDCL and Indian Hill.

Social studies teacher Mr. Alex Dowger and English teacher Ms. Victoria Frabotta advised the Lions with assistance from a team of dedicated and generous volunteer legal advisors, including Mr. Matt Lallo '02, Mr. Shawn Maestle (father of Emma, Morgan, and John), and Mr. Martin Delahunty (father of Jackie '16 and John). Mr. Jeff Black (father of alumni Jeff, Catherine, and Justin) and Mr. Dennis Fogarty (father of Connor '13, Tom, and Dan) provided legal assistance as needed.

The Legal Lions' network of professional support also included Ms. Michelle DeBaltzo '88 and Cuyahoga Common Pleas Judge Deena Calabrese '89. Chardon Municipal Court Judge Terri Stupica officiated over scrimmages in her courtroom prior to district competition.
