NDCL Alumni Continue Service Traditions

The Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Alumni Association sponsored a series of “Olympic Games” for students from St. Francis School in Cleveland on Saturday, April 26th.

Officially established in 2006, the NDCL Alumni Association’s Mission Statement is “To support the interests of NDCL, enhance the school and community through philanthropy and service, provide leadership, networking and a voice to all alumni of NDCL, all through the spirit of Mary.” NDCL Alumni President Scott Phillips `01 said “We hope this will be one of many annual programs that give back to the community and continue to build on the basic service requirements that were expected from all of us as NDCL students.” Phillips continued, “Our alumni group wanted service to the community to be among the major activities of our association and volunteers spent many hours planning this event to benefit the children from this inner-city school.”

“Dozens of NDCL alumni assisted with the assorted games for St. Francis students in grades 3 through 6” said NDCL’s Alumni Director, Keven Krajnak. “With strong direction from alumni Tim Salcer `96 and Jack DiCello `96, the young St. Francis competitors enjoyed an exciting day of games, prizes, pizza, pop and snacks.” After the games were finished the children enjoyed their lunch and families attended the team spirit contest and awards ceremony.

NDCL Alumni Association volunteers provided team shirts, Cavs and Indians prizes, medals, ribbons and all the food. “We have adopted St. Francis School in Cleveland for this Inaugural Olympic Games” said Salcer. “Our plan is to continue community outreach programs of this type on an annual basis” he continued.

A special “Olympic Day” flyer was designed by freelance graphic artist Ernie Richmann `95, owner of e4design and the food was contributed by John Werner `00 owner of Beef O’Brady’s Restaurant in Eastlake and Frank Catanese `93 owner of Giuseppes Pizza in Wickliffe.

First Legacy Day Celebrates Tradition

NDCL marked its first-ever Legacy Day on Friday April 11th with a series of activities designed to celebrate the heritage of our parent schools: Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School.

About 80 alumni from as far back at the NDA Class of 1933 and from as far away as Texas joined students and staff for a luncheon in the library, which was transformed into a gallery of NDA and Latin memorabilia. Following a brief program, students escorted the alumni on tours of the building.

"I loved the Academy on Ansel Road," remarked one alumna, "but this facility and campus are just fantastic. There's so much to offer, and the students I've met today are wonderful."

All NDCL students and staff wore special NDA and Latin Legacy Day t-shirts to help mark the occasion. Some even brought the legacy to life by wearing NDA skirts and varsity letter sweaters and sports uniforms from Cathedral Latin. Students also participated in a trivia contest about NDA and Latin history.

Special thanks to Alumni Director Keven Krajnak '98, who guided the development of Legacy Day after the idea was first proposed by Tim Salcer '96 and other members of the NDCL Alumni Association. The event's success ensures that it will become a new tradition as the legacy of Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School lives on and flourishes at NDCL, both now and into the future.
