Our students and teachers took our mission statement to heart by transforming at least a little part of our world by cleaning up the beach at Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor on September 24.
In about two hours of scouring the beach, the group of 40 students from our Environmental Science class and Conservation Club collected and catalogued over 4,000 items of trash, including 1,161 small plastic items, 822 cigarette butts and cigar tips, 190 plastic straws, and even an entire cooler.
Students used some of the items they collected to create sculptures and posters to highlight the environmental impact of recklessly discarding trash that finds its way into Lake Erie. The clean-up also included a prayer experience that focused participants on the beauty of creation and our Christian responsibility to cherish and protect our planet so that we can pass it on to future generations.
Science teacher Mrs. Liz Ford organized the beach clean-up with the help of science teacher Mr. Nathan Smith and theology teacher Miss Stacey Brandt. NDCL has sponsored this experience every year since 2013.
