Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School celebrated the achievements of 160 members of the Class of 2017 during the school's 27th annual commencement ceremony on May 26 at the Mentor Fine Arts Center.

Notre Dame Schools President Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane delivered the commencement address. Sister Jacquelyn will conclude her decade of service as president at the end of next month.

In her remarks to the graduates, Sister Jacquelyn urged them to focus on the uniquely human capacities to love, care, hope, imagine, reflect, and make ethical choices. Quoting from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, she explained that what the world needs most in our technological age is "all the things that the heart can do."

And our hearts, she said, ultimately find their inspiration in the person and example of Jesus.

"An active prayer life and participation in the sacramental life of the Church sustain us in consciously choosing good at all times and giving hope to our world," she stressed. "What better way to live the truth in love and transform our world into a City of God?"

Sister Jacquelyn concluded her remarks by sharing a prayer originally written by Maryknoll Sister Ita Ford, one of the four American missionaries martyred in El Salvador in 1980:

“I hope you come to find
that which gives life a deep meaning for you.
Something worth living for—maybe even worth dying for.
Something that energizes you, enthuses you,
enables you to keep moving ahead.
I can’t tell you want it might be—
that’s for you to find, to choose, to love.
I can just encourage you to start looking
and support you in the search.”
