STAR TEACHER: Science Department Chairperson Miss Maureen Wahl (second from left) celebrates with Cornell University Merrill Presidential Scholar Jaclyn Melvin '13 and professor Dr. Matthias Wieland and Cornell President Dr. Martha Pollack.

As a Merrill Presidential Scholar, Jaclyn is among the top 1% of more than 6,000 members of Cornell's Class of 2017. She nominated Miss Wahl for the university's Special Teachers Are Recognized (STAR) Award for inspiring her to pursue scientific study in college.

The university covered all expenses for Miss Wahl and other honorees to travel to Cornell's Ithaca, New York, campus for the award presentation.

"Throughout high school, Miss Wahl fostered my love for the sciences. She conveyed an infectious passion for the subjects she was teaching that furthered my desire to pursue a science-based profession," Jaclyn wrote in her testimonial delivered at awards luncheon.

"She greatly supported me as I prepared to enter the field of animal science in college, and I hope I can bring the same dedication and ardor to my career that she brought to her classes."

During the awards ceremony, Cornell surprised Miss Wahl and the other honorees by announcing that the university will fund $4,000 scholarships to incoming students in their names.

An animal science major, Jaclyn will enter Cornell's School of Veterinary Medicine in the fall after studying Latin in Rome this summer.
