Lions roar in Cleveland Clinic competition

19 students win awards

In yet another example of outstanding student performance, NDCL students did better than ever in this year's Cleveland Clinic eXpressions competition, winning the Best in Show Award in mathematics as well as seven additional awards in the prestigious program's math and art competitions.

Seniors Kayla Powell, Kendra Minichello, Hailey Mullin, and Hannah Mullin won the eXpressions Best in Show Award in Mathematics—the competition's highest honor—for their project entitled "Floating Body of Handwashing." Their achievement marks the second time NDCL has won the top eXpressions prize.

The team of juniors Jacquelin Nguyen, Rachel Murphy, Justin Satterlee, and Elizabeth Woodhouse won the blue ribbon for their mathematics project focusing on cleaning contamination.

Also in the math competition, juniors Kyle Borah, Jacob Craven, and Nick Wozniak won the red ribbon for "Strking Statistics on Substance Abuse." Seniors John Burwinkel, Augie King, Thomas Shero, and Zach Urda completed NDCL's near-sweep of the eXpressions math competition with an honorable mention for their "Trials and Treatments" project.

Four NDCL artists won eXpressions awards: Senior Andrew Kerr and junior Julia Landgraf won red ribbons, while sophomore Harper Corto and junior Lauren Keep won white ribbons.

"Over 1,400 art, language, and math projects from 53 schools were submitted to eXpressions," said Ms. Christine DeNicola, the Clinic's manager of school based-programs. "As a result, this year’s competition was incredibly tough."

eXpressions is an interdisciplinary program that utilizes art, language, and math to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning, students interpret, analyze, and communicate research conducted by Cleveland Clinic summer interns. Last year six NDCL students won spots in the renowned summer internship program.

In addition to being featured in the eXpressions Art, Language, and Math eXhibition at the Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland, honorees and their projects will be highlighted in the program's print and online catalogs. The exhibition at the Great Lakes Science Center will open on February 12 with a formal dedication and reception. Students will receive gift cards, and their teachers will be awarded educational grants from the Clinic.

Special thanks to mathematics teachers Mrs. Ashley Kelm and Mrs. Beth Ward and art teacher Mr. George Yaniga for their efforts in the guiding our students' award-winning eXpressions projects.
