Andrew Demeter wins first prize out of 2,355 entries in C-SPAN documentary competition

Congratulations to sophomore Andrew Demeter, who won a first prize award in C-SPAN's National 2014 StudentCam Documentary Competition.

Andrew's documentary, entitled “We The People, Genetically Modified,” highlights the issues associated with genetically modified organisms. His first-place award comes with a $3,000 prize from C-SPAN .

"I first learned about the competition at NDCL from Mrs. Eby," Demeter recalls. Mrs. Vicki Eby is the chairperson of NDCL's Technology and Business Department.

"I wanted to pick a topic that affects people everyday. It was a lot of work and an extensive process, but I am really happy with the result and honored that my piece was awarded first prize."

Andrew is quick to point out the assistance he received from classmate Andrew Wright, who served as executive producer and director of photography on the project. Wright also managed lighting and sound for the award-winning entry.

"I have a new appreciation for the production process after completing this project," Demeter explained."I have always had to do the shooting and editing but have now learned how to connect with people to set up interviews, do research, prepare for the interviews, create set designs, and more. It's a lot of work!"

Andrew's video will air on C-SPAN at 6:50 a.m. E.T. and throughout the day on April 25, 2014. You can view it online here.

Each year since 2006, C-SPAN has invited middle school students (grades 6-8) and high school students (grades 9-12) to produce short documentaries on an issue of national importance.
