NDCL artists win prestigious awards in national, state competition
This spring NDCL's student artists have fashioned an impressive palette of achievement by winning 10 awards in national and state competition.

Senior Rylee Yackin made NDCL history by being the first student to earn a national medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the country's longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens.

Rylee's silver medal places her among an elite group of student artists. This year judges awarded medals to less than 1% of the 230,000 works submitted by students across the country.

At the state level, nine artworks by seven NDCL artists advanced beyond regional competition in the Annual Governor's Art Show.

Judges selected senior Barry Markiewich's photo entitled "Float" as one of the show's top 25 works out of more than 10,000 entries in this year's competition. His work will become part of the show's permanent digital gallery. Barry also won a regional award for his creative video entry entitled "How to Make a Corn Dog."

Senior Sophia Kroto's painting entitled "Angela and Marcus" is one of only 59 pieces selected statewide for cameo displays at the Governor's Office and the Ohio Department of Education headquarters in Columbus. Sophia also won a regional award for her painting entitled "The Addict."

These students also won regional awards in the Governor's Art Show:

  • Senior Asha Singh for "Glass Half Full"
  • Senior Addison Schermer for "Look Closer"
  • Senior Brandon Fischer for "Eye of the Wild"
  • Senior Rylee Yackin for "Squirrel"
  • Junior Jeanna Sukey for "A Hundred Eyes"

Our national and state award winners are the students of Art Department Chairperson Mrs. Mary Ann Sedivy and art teacher Mr. George Yaniga.
