Mock Trial Team competes in Empire international event

Last week our award-winning Mock Trial Team joined a field of 32 teams from throughout the U.S. as well as South Korea to compete in Empire Mock Trial's Southern Showdown at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

The Empire competition gives participants the opportunity to refine and enhance their legal skills as they face challengers from elite mock trial programs in the nation and beyond. Many teams at Empire have won or at least competed in the state or national championship trials.

The Legal Lions finished among Empire's top 16 teams, coming in 13th with five wins out of eight trials. They competed against teams from Texas, Georgia, Colorado, and South Korea.

In addition to courtroom competition, Empire focuses students on the needs of others by including a community service experience during the four-day event. Students fanned out into a local park to invite those living on streets to join them for lunch at Atlanta's Safehouse Center. They then sat down with their guests to share food and conversation.

"This competition provided us with an opportunity to see our students at their finest," explained Social Studies Department Chairperson Mrs. Molly Schneider, who co-advises the team with English teacher Ms. Vicki Frabotta.  "In a matter of a few days, we watched them grow significantly in their argumentative skills, confidence, and compassion for others."
