Hammers swing, dust flies as facility enhancements begin

Students and teachers were barely out the door at the end of the school year as crews arrived to begin work on two exciting facility enhancements: construction of our new Annunciation Chapel and campus ministry center and the installation of new lockers for all students.

"These projects began so quickly because of the support and generosity of our donors," commented President Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane. "Our intent is to have the renovated chapel and campus ministry gathering area and offices ready for the opening of school in August."

Light, simplicity,
and the desire for
a prayerful worship space have guided
us in planning the chapel renovation.
Sister Jacquelyn explained that the new stained glass windows for Annunciation Chapel will not be installed until September because of the time-consuming process required to create each window by hand. Artists from Henninger's, Inc., are building the windows in their studio on Cleveland's West Side. Wojcik Builders, Inc., of Oakwood is the general contractor for the entire chapel project.

"Light, simplicity, and the desire for a prayerful worship space have guided us in planning the chapel renovation," Sister Jacquelyn stressed.

The chapel project is just one of the capital improvements now underway. Workers from Rayhaven, Inc., of Richfield have been already removed our 1,000+ old lockers in preparation for the installation of new lockers for all of our students later this summer. The new lockers' contemporary blue-and-gold color scheme will brighten the look of our corridors and give students far more room to store their coats, backpacks, textbooks, and other supplies.

Sister Jacquelyn expressed her gratitude to the students, families, staff, and friends of NDCL who helped us raise all of the money needed for the locker project in less than one month.

"We're also especially grateful to our friends at the Cardinal Community Credit Union for offering a $35 match for deposits toward the locker project," Sister Jacquelyn said. "Cardinal's support created energy and enthusiasm that helped us reach our goal with lightning speed."

THE CALM BEFORE THE CONSTRUCTION STORM: Here's how the chapel looked the day before the construction crews arrived to begin work on our new Annunciation Chapel and campus ministry center.

NOW A CLEAN SLATE: With nearly all previous surfaces removed, the chapel space is now ready to be transformed by artists and craftsmen into our new Annunciation Chapel.

UNLOCKING THE PAST: Crews from Rayhaven, Inc. remove more than 1,000 old lockers during the first week of June. Their work uncovered hundreds of bits of history that had slipped behind the lockers over the past 52 years.
