NDCL math, art students take top awards in Cleveland Clinic eXpressions competition

In yet another example of record-breaking student performance, NDCL students did better than ever in this year's Cleveland Clinic eXpressions competition, winning the Best in Show and blue-ribbon awards in mathematics as well as blue and white ribbons and an honorable mention in art.

Sophomores Augie King and Zach Urda's project entitled "Missed Medication Errors Due to the Therapist" won the eXpressions Best in Show Award in Mathematics—the competition's highest honor. Their achievement marks the first time NDCL has won the top eXpressions prize.

Also in the math competition, the team of juniors Reagan Hoyt, Haley Otto, and Alyssa Rice and sophomore Valerie Raicevich won blue ribbons for their project focusing on brain research.

Three NDCL artists won eXpressions awards: Senior McKenna Randall, blue ribbon; senior Caroline Pavlish, white ribbon; and junior Katherine Busch, honorable mention.

"Roughly 1,500 art, language, and math projects from 51 schools were submitted," explained Mr. Bryan Pflaum, the Cleveland Clinic's Director of Civic Education. "As a result, this year’s competition was incredibly tough."

eXpressions is an interdisciplinary program that utilizes art, language, and math to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning, students interpret, analyze, and communicate research conducted by Cleveland Clinic summer interns. Last year three NDCL students won spots in the renowned summer internship program.

In addition to being featured in the eXpressions Art, Language, and Math eXhibition at the Global Center for Health Innovation in downtown Cleveland, honorees and their projects will be highlighted in the program's print and online catalogs. The exhibition at the Global Center will open on February 9 with a formal dedication and reception. Students will receive gift cards, and their teachers will be awarded educational grants from the Clinic.

Special thanks to Mathematics Department Chairperson Mrs. Marcia Pecek, Art Department Chairperson Mrs. Mary Ann Sedivy, and art teacher Mr. George Yaniga for their efforts in the guiding our students' award-winning eXpressions projects.
